Kindness Challenge #13: “Stand Up”

Uncategorized   /

There is NOTHING I find more deplorable than a bully. But bullies aren’t always kids kicking our as$es behind the monkey bars at recess. In the grown up world, bullies show up in more nuanced ways: That mom at the playground who always gossips about everyone else … That relative who makes discriminatory comments at holiday gatherings and always gets away with it … Or that guy at the office who always makes jokes that embarrass and put other people down.

We know it’s not cool. We feel the knot in our stomach. But, we just don’t say anything. We remain silent.

But here’s the thing about silence, friends: Silence Implies Consent. I know it can be scary to speak up in awkward situations, but today, I’m challenging you to find that courage. Today’s Kindness Challenge is called “Stand Up!”:

(AHHH!!! Technical difficulties! Video code won’t embed today, folks. Sorry!)

So, yea … look out for one another today. If someone was giving YOU a hard time or talking smack about you when you weren’t around, you’d want someone to stand up for you. So, be the change you want to see in the world.

Standing Up doesn’t  have to mean being confrontational. Sometimes the most powerful thing to do is simply put a different, POSITIVE perspective on the table and stick to it! If someone is talking poorly about someone else, perhaps say “Oh, I don’t know…” and offer a time when you experienced something positive with that person (i.e. they worked hard, they were kind, they looked great, etc.).

I know these gestures are rarely easy or comfortable… but they ARE necessary. And, here’s the thing I’ve noticed: even if I felt nervous about standing up and speaking my mind, that nervousness never feels as bad as the guilt I feel later knowing I let someone be harmed (even verbally) without helping to prevent it.

So, give it go. Today, look for opportunities to STAND UP. Make choices that align with kindness AND with courage.

Have a brave day!

xo,

Cris
