Kindness Challenge #15: “Fair Weather Friend”

“Everyone needs someone to be there for them … just to be there.”  -Pema Chodrom

Today, I’m thinking about friendship and how much fun it is when friends show up during the good times.  Joys are truly made bigger when they can be shared with people we love. But what about showing up for a friend during their dark time? Too often this is when so-called “friends” scatter to the wind.

Today’s challenge is a very personal one for me. I just came off of a very dark year that was made brighter and bearable by the extraordinary army of friends who showed up for me and were willing to just sit in that dark time with me. Their advice was helpful, their gestures of support were appreciated … but what was MOST comforting (and lifted my heart the most) was the knowledge that they cared enough to just BE there. Life throws us ALL curve balls, and some of those curve balls can take a legitimately lengthy time to get through and get over. Sometimes the greatest kindnesses we can offer another is just sticking around.

On that note, here is today’s Kindness Challenge: “Fair Weather Friend

So today, be gentle with the people around you and pay attention to who might be sitting in a dark space. Maybe someone is going through a breakup, … or lost someone close to them, … or lost a job , … or is going through an illness,or is just lonely in general. Can you find a way to acknowledge them in that space today? Don’t try to step in and rescue them. Don’t try to fix anything and DON’T step in any further than you are truly willing to go. You CAN show up for someone and still hold your boundaries. Maybe just say:  ” Hey, I don’t want to intrude on your business … but I just wanted to say that I noticed you seem down. I’m sorry you are feeling that way. I hope you are in better spirits soon.” Sometimes that’s all that’s needed.

Okay, go be awesome people! And thanks to those of you really sticking to this campaign. There’s no fair weather kindness with you! 🙂

Talk to you tomorrow,

Cris
