Kindness Challenge #9: “Better With Age”

My Nana was a seriously bad ass, Grade A, super cool old lady. When I was little, sure,  she was a pretty great grandma … but once I became a young adult, she became one of my very best friends. This transition happened because I made a point of sitting down with her and actually getting to know her as A PERSON, not just my chocolate cake baking grandma.

And wow, what a person she was! Scrappy. Funny. Vulnerable. Brave.  (she was also pretty fond of the boys in her younger days… <insert gasp of feigned shock> “Nana!!!” … haha). I was surprised (and delighted) to learn how much we truly had in common.

And I think people forget this common ground with senior citizens. Our culture tends to render the elderly invisible. We start to see seniors as one collective group, good only for talks about WWII, physical ailments, and walking to school uphill … in the snow … both ways!!  😉

We forget that these seniors were once rebellious teenagers partying with their friends (like we were)… or that they had their hearts broken by love gone wrong (like we have) … or that they were anxious new parents (like we are) … or that they once struggled to make a name for themselves professionally (like we are). My point: we have so  much more in common with the senior citizens around us then we  realize.

So, exploring that concept is what today’s video is all about. Here’s your Kindness Challenge:

Alright. I’m really counting on you to make good on this one. It might take a little more mindfulness or a little extra effort to execute, but I think it will be one of the more powerful and impactful challenges you complete. So, give it a go. Then, PLEASE come back to the blog (or our FB wall) and leave a comment about your experience. Strike up a conversation with a senior citizen in your world and see what common ground you can discover.

REMEMBER, as Cora Harvey Armstrong said:

“Inside every older person is a younger person — wondering what the hell happened.”

Happy Friday!!

xo,

Cris

P.S. Congratulations to ** Bonnie Brewster Rich **: the winner of our first Kindness Care Package Giveaway. HOORAY!!!!

And, thanks to EVERYONE  for participating in the contest … we had so much fun with this one, we’re gearing up to do another before the 30-Day Kindness Challenge ends. Stay tuned!
