Rising Lotus Kid Profile: Sandesh

Uncategorized   /

Name: Sandesh
Age: 13

Sandesh comes off being shy most of the time. He usually keeps to himself during homework study time. His grades are always A’s and B’s, except in math where his grades had been C’s and D’s. Volunteer Metha Skylab luckily unraveled the mystery of why during his stay at Rising Lotus.

While tutoring the children one afternoon, Metha was confused when Sandesh successfully completed math problems at home that he had solved incorrectly on his test at school. (Metha had asked Sandesh to redo the problems to see if he could discern Sandesh’s area of struggle). While reviewing the now correctly solved equations, Metha discovered tally marks on the back of Sandesh’s math notebook. Thousands and thousands of tally marks! Mystery solved. Sandesh needed to draw tally marks to do simple addition to solve the multiplication and long division problems he was doing, and there was no way to do those tallies while in class.

Metha then showed Sandesh an easy way to add on his fingers and with each equations he solved quickly and correctly with this new technique, Sandesh’s face lit up more and more with understanding, excitement and newly found empowered confidence. Awesome!

A beautiful example of how visiting volunteers really do positively and powerfully impact the lives of the children here at Rising Lotus. Thanks, Metha! These days Sandesh says he wants to be a teacher. Hmm … perhaps a math teacher? We shall see.
